The module begins with an introduction to microwave ovens, including

how they work, how to use them safely and properly, and the benefits

of microwave cooking (e.g., the ovens use less energy and do not dilute

nutritional value). Next, students learn how certain types of foods

contribute to the formation of cavities and focus on selecting healthier

foods to prevent cavities.

Students gain two cooking experiences in this module: one to prepare

mini pizzas, and the other, baked potatoes, which are highlighted as a

healthy alternative to potato chips and French fries. The module

presents a creative challenge focused on healthy snacking: each

student thinks of five healthy snacks that could be offered in fast-food

restaurants and develops a marketing plan, including a print or radio

advertisement, to encourage a fast-food chain to offer one of these

healthy foods.

The focus on nutrition continues with a lesson on the Food Guide

Pyramid and making healthier selections at all kinds of restaurants and at

home. The module concludes with an overview of volunteer and career

opportunities, ranging from specific food-related jobs, such as baker and

dietitian, to various other occupations, including athletic trainers and food

chemists. Similar modules, Food for Thought: Healthy Eating (40056)

and Wake-Up Call: Cooking Breakfast (40061), can be used to

complement this module.
