First, students learn the parts of a sewing machine, and how to safely
and properly use the machine. They develop skills in creating straight
stitches and pivots; winding a bobbin; threading a sewing machine; and
securing threads by backstitching, lock-stitching, and tying knots.
Students also practice reinforcing squares, curves, and corners.
Students gain experience with various tools for cutting, measuring, and
marking fabrics before sewing begins. They also practice sewing
seams, ironing to press hems into place, and creating casings. Students
finish the module by exploring careers that require sewing and related
skills.
