Students begin with self-discovery exercises to identify their aptitudes,
skills, and interests -- information that helps them select jobs and
careers. They learn the distinction between these types of employment
opportunities, and use the multimedia curriculum to map their career
paths. As the process continues, students engage in more in-depth
self-discovery to realize their values, personality, and competencies,
and how these factors determine the most appropriate and potentially
rewarding career options.
In addition, students write resumes and cover letters, and learn to
research employment opportunities through the Internet, newspapers,
and other resources. They practice preparing for job interviews,
including role playing and other exercises to develop strong, positive
impressions for potential employers. Educational software and games
help students enhance skills and personal traits that will help them
obtain employment and succeed in the workplace. Other lessons focus
on equal rights and employment-related laws, including discrimination
and sexual harassment, as well as specific responsibilities expected of
all employees.
This module also presents the potential benefits, disadvantages, and
challenges of self-employment. Students discover the personal
characteristics that entrepreneurs typically possess, and learn
decision-making techniques that everyone can use, whether or not they
are business owners. Other topics include the various forms of
ownership, the process of financing a business, and how to decide on
the type of business and where to establish it.
