This module emphasizes the importance of both exercise and healthy

eating. Students learn how aerobic exercise can help improve their

cardiorespiratory (heart and lungs) health, emotional state and physical

endurance. They examine what each kind of nutrient does and how to

achieve a balanced diet. Hands-on activities illustrate fat and muscle,

and the differences in their composition and effects on health and

physical appearance.

To encourage and prepare students to eat healthfully, the module

includes a segment on shopping for and preparing healthy meals.

Shopping guidelines include reading food labels and selecting the

freshest produce; preparation tips are substituting ingredients and using

alternative cooking methods to reduce intake of fat, cholesterol, and

calories. Students follow a recipe, baking techniques, and safety

guidelines to prepare a healthy snack of oatmeal cookies.
