Tools and Their Functions
Effect Tools - Smudge, Burn, Etc.

Directly to the left of the dodge tool's icon slot on the toolbar is the blur tool (the icon displays a raindrop.) The blur tool does just what you'd expect - it blurs the area where you drag the tool. Undo any previous actions performed on the image if you'd like, then try out the blur tool.

The sharpen tool, found under the blur tool, increases contrast at the edges of things within your image.

Finally, the smudge tool, also found underneath the blur tool's slot, smudges the colors of the image in the direction you drag your cursor.

By creatively combining each of these tools, you can create some rather impressive effects.

The end of Chapter 2 is nigh! Only a handful of miscellaneous tools are left to cover. Depending on what you intend to use Photoshop for, you may get a lot of use out of them, or you may find yourself not using them at all.
