Tools and Their Functions
Effect Tools - Smudge, Burn, Etc.

These tools are primarily used to correct defects in photographs, but can also be used to produce some interesting effects in any images.

For this exercise I am using a portion of an image borrowed from http://darkwing.uoregon.edu/~nic/landscape.jpg. Any image will do, although one with lots of color works best. For this reason, I recommend a landscape photograph.

After you've found your image, select the Dodge tool. The dodge tool is used to lighten pixels. You can select what to lighten via the options bar: Shadows, Midtones, or Highlights. You can also adjust the amount of exposure. Adjusting the exposure percentage determines how fast the tool lightens the areas you drag over with your cursor. You can also change the type of brush stroke and toggle the airbrush feature for this tool.

Adjust the exposure to somewhere around 50%, then drag across the image.

Underneath the dodge tool's icon is the burn tool. The burn tool functions similarly to the dodge tool, but has the opposite effect: it darkens the pixels in the area you drag over with the tool. Try it now.

The final tool sharing the dodge tool's slot in the toolbar is the sponge tool. The sponge tool can either be set to saturate or desaturate the color of an image. Desaturating gradually removes color from an image, while saturating will make the colors more vibrant.
