In chemistry, an allotrope is a molecule composed entirely of the same element. Until the discovery of Buckminsterfullerene in 1985 only two known allotropes of Carbon were believed to exist. The possibility of a third allotrope was entirely unexpected, and baffled the scientists who tried to explain its existence.
