World War I was the result of economic and imperial competition as well as nationalism.  Fear of war prompted military alliances and an arms race, which further escalated the tension contributing to the outbreak of war.  The final blow was when Archduke Francis Ferdinand, heir to the Austria-Hungarian throne, was assassinated in Sarajevo, Bosnia, by a Serbian nationalist.
