1 - 5, 1863 |
THE BATTLE OF CHANCELORSVILLE - Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia defeats Major General Joseph Hooker's Army of the Poromac in one of the fiercest battles of the eastern Civil War. It is the last in a long succession of victories for Lee's troups. Combined casualties for Chancelorsville excedded 30,000 men, including Lt. General Thomas (Stonewall) Jackson Lee's right hand man, who was wounded on May 2. |

10, 1863 |
Lt. Gen. Thomas Jackson dies after being wounded on May 2. General Robert E. Lee Begins Planning his next operation. |
| LATE
MAY 1863 |
General Lee presents his plan for a Northern Infasion by the Army of Northern Virginia. His idea is to move north into Maryland and Pennsylvania. Doing this will cause a threat to the northern capital, Washington. The Army of the Potomac will be forced to respond, and attack Lee, without regard for danger. This would give Lee a chance to destroy the federal army and move against Wasshington to end the war. Lee recieves approval for his operation and begins to make preparations. |
| JUNE
1863 |
Lee moves north with his army of 75,000 men. By the 21 Lee's lead elements are entering Pennsylvania. Late in the month Major General Joseph Hooker begins to chase Lee with the Army of the Potomac, approxamatly 95,000 men. |
