About Career Exploration

The Personal Computing class that already exists is a requirement for all ninth graders. This course is used to refresh keyboarding skills, enhance study skills, and begin student career exploration. The DAT (Differential Aptitude Test) is given at the beginning of the course and the results are used to help the students to choose a career for a final research paper on that particular career. Also, the Guidance Information System (GIS) is given as a personal inventory for career exploration. I would like to have each student create a career portfolio to be kept throughout the four years at high school. Students would keep this portfolio on file and add important pieces of work throughout their high school career. This portfolio would have a student's career goal and other materials from the career course, like the DAT and the GIS, along with shadowing experiences and internships completed by the student. This portfolio should be used during scheduling courses for the next year.

Shadowing Experiences

Students may choose to complete shadowing experiences throughout their four years at ELCO. Students need to indicate an interest in a particular career area. They may indicate an individual they wish to shadow or they may see a guidance counselor or Mrs. Hartman for help. There are permission forms and a project that must be completed for the shadow experience. Please ask a guidance counselor or Mrs. Hartman for more information.

About Cooperative Education

Cooperative education is one segment of the school-to-work system. It is a school-to-work activity that enables students to combine academics with occupational instruction while learning and earning on-the-job. Emphasis is placed on the students education and employability.

Cooperative education, CO-OP has been practiced in the U.S. for more than seventy years and has expanded into many college programs, such as; engineering, computer sciences and business. It involves students, as regular employees, in paid work that is related to their field of study and their career objective.

Specific guidelines for participation in the Cooperative Education Program are outline by each high school and the Pennsylvania Department of Education. The cooperating teacher at Eastern Lebanon County High School, Mrs. Holly Hartman is available to discuss the program.
