2010 Summer Camp Guide

American Legion Auxiliary, Dept. of PA

Keystone Girls State

The American Legion Auxiliary, Department of Pennsylvania will hold its 65th session of Keystone Girls State, June 20-26, 2010, atShippensburg University in Shippensburg, PA.

Keystone Girls State is a top-notch program that offers valuable government instruction and leadership training while affording an opportunity to form lasting friendships. It is not a camp or vacation, but rather a school of government. The main objective of the program is to educate young women as to the duties, privilege, rights and responsibilities of American citizenship. Girls State is a mythical non-partisan, 51st state. Attendees will experience all levels of government from city, county, state and federal government and will be assigned to a mythical political party.

Keystone Girls State in cooperation with Adams State College and Clemson University will again be offering the opportunity to acquire up to four (4) college credits. These courses are available to students who attend either Girls State or Boys State. The cost of these leadership or government course are available to the students at a considerable discounted cost. These credits are fully transferable to other colleges or universities.

We are asking you to assist us in selecting the best representation that your school has to offer. Girls State is an outstanding opportunity for young women interested in student council, political science, government, law and leadership and we earnestly solicit your assistance in promoting our program.

In order to be considered girls must be citizens of the United States and have completed their junior year in high school by June 2010. In addition, guidelines require that all participants have never been wed and do not have children of their own. She also should be recognized for her leadership abilities, character, good citizenship and scholarship. The program is strenuous physically as well as emotionally and this should also be a factor in the selection process. The program is very active and will require a lot of walking. We are fortunately unable to meet any dietary requests.

An alternate candidate should be selected in the event of a last minute emergency. Please make your selections as early as possible before students arrange summers jobs and other opportunities. Deadline for applications is May 1, 2010.

If you wish to acquire more information or have questions, please contact the American Legion Auxiliary Unit President listed below or me. You may also visit our website at http://ala.pa-legion.com. The Student section from home page has information about this program and other programs and scholarships in which your students may be interested.

There also is a brother program to Keystone Girls State... it is Keystone Boys State. It is the same type program for 11th grade gentleman.
