Dr. Helen Ross Russel is one or our nation's first female natualists and authors.
Dr. Russell was born in 1915 on a farm outside of Myerstown. After high school, she
recieved her Bachelor of Arts Degree from Lebanon Valley College and her
Master's Degree and Doctorate Degree From Cornell University.
Dr. Russell published her first work while in high school. Scince then she has
published more than 20 books, including "Ten Minute Field Trips", "City Critters",
"Springtime Tree Seeds", and "Clarion the Killdeer" to name a few, and 300 Articles
in such publications as The Communicator, Bio-Science, Nature Study, Canadian
Audubon, Ranger Rick, National Parks Magazine, Britannic, The New York State
Conservationist, and The Instructor.
Dr. Russell's lengthy career includes teaching in the Jackson Township and the
Bethel schools, and positions with Wave Hill Center for Environmental Studies, the
Manhattan Country School, the American Nature Study Society, and the American
Museum of Natural History. She has also been an Academic Dean at the State
College in Fitchburg, MA.
Dr. Russel is currently the editor of "Nature Study Journal," a journal of
environmental education and interpretation. She currently lectures and teaches
workshops throughout the year across the country.
Dr. Russell has recived numerous honors and awards throughout the year across
the country.
Dr. Russell maintains two residences -- one in Myerstown, and the other in Jersey
City, NJ.
